Accomplishments

Fredericksburg SHINES is wrapping up a successful second year and embarking on an exciting third year in operation.   We are grateful to hundreds of people who are helping us fulfill our mission to make Fredericksburg the state leader in sustainability practices. These are some of the ways Fredericksburg SHINES has thrived and served our local community since its March 21, 2013 founding.

Clean Energy

  • 150 participants:   Solar workshop, solar forum, and solar financing workshop
  • 45 participants:   1st Annual Sustainability Home tour where nine families opened their properties to the public so visitors could see first-hand what can be done with rainwater collection, solar energy, electric vehicles,  xeriscaping and other initiatives.
  • 150 participants:  2cd Annual Sustainability Green Home tour where ten families opened their properties to the public so visitors could see first-hand what can be done with rainwater collection, solar energy, electric vehicles, xeriscaping, strawbale, compressed earth, and rammed earth innovative building construction materials.
  • 170 participants:  3rd Annual Sustainability Green Home tour where ten families opened their properties to the public so visitors could see first-hand what can be done with rainwater collection, solar energy, electric vehicles, xeriscaping, strawbale, compressed earth, and rammed earth innovative building construction materials.
  • 15+ participants:   Solarize Gillespie County initiative with goal of getting each installed with solar by end of 2014.
  • Nearly 20 participants:   Solar 101 for Churches, Schools, and other Non-Profit Ministries
  • 7 participants:  Solar 101 for Churches, Schools, and other Non-Profit Ministries
  • Through “Solarize Gillespie County” initiative, first round of heavily discounted-priced solar PV was installed in at least 8 Gillespie County homes
  • At least three solar PV installations have occurred in Gillespie County as a result of homeowner’s attendance at one of our Green Home Tours
  • Second solar PV was installed in Fredericksburg and a third solar PV is scheduled for later in 2015.
  • Informed more than 500 households about “Solarize Gillespie County”, heavily discounted-price solar PV program
  • Educated a local builder and local electrician about installing solar PV on a residential roof
  • Articles highlighting energy savings, including clean energy, from our organization have been published in local newspaper and magazines
  • 2 radio interviews on Sun Radio and 1 interview on TPR about Green Home Tour 2015

“Complete Streets”

  • Presentation to City Council, FISD leaders, and other community groups
  • Bike to School Day, Providence Hall
  • Installation of locally sculpted bicycle rack at Marktplatz
  • Installation of bicycle rack at Providence Hall
  • Initiation of National Walk to School Day at Fredericksburg Elementary school
  • Volunteered at Frantzen Park improvement project (including installation of first bicycle/pedestrian trail in Fredericksburg)
  • Volunteered to support Texas Gran Fondo bicycle race

Creation Care

  • Presentation to nearly 20 local pastors and non-profit ministry leaders about “going solar” with their buildings
  • Presentation to 7 members of Board of Trustees of a local church about “going solar” with their buildings
  • Mentored and coached a local high school student on her senior thesis on “Christians and the Environment”
  • Funding provided to allow local pastors and non-profit ministry leaders to attend 2cd Annual Sustainability Green Home Tour free of charge
  • Represented at area ministerial alliance and give regular updates on local efforts in sustainability and creation care
  • Spoke on subject of creation care at a church in Marble Falls, Texas.

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

  • Donation of first ever EV public charging station in Fredericksburg
  • Recruited a local Bed and Breakfast to install their own outlet for charging EVs
  • Showcased EVs in Sustainability Green Home Tours
  • Educated two local electricians about installing outlets for charging EVs
  • Recruited owners of 4 Tesla EVs to display their vehicles and give a presentation about EVs to the Hill Country Home and Garden Show in March 2015
  • Recruited owners of 2 Teslas EV to display their vehicles at Water Conservation Expo in April 2015
  • Recruit owners of 3 EVs to display their vehicles at 2015 Green Home Tour

Smart Water Solutions

  • Smart Water Solutions presentation on water conservation made to 10+ classes of 3rd  graders, teachers, and parent volunteers from Fredericksburg Elementary school in 2013, 2014, and 2015
  • Smart Water Solutions presentation on rainwater harvesting (in collaboration with City of Fredericksburg) made to all classes of 4th graders, teachers, and parent volunteers from Fredericksburg and Stonewall Elementary schools in 2014 and 2015 (with addition of St. Mary’s Catholic school)
  • Smart Water Conservation program (in collaboration with City of Fredericksburg) to provide presentations free of charge to community groups
  • Helped plan Smart Water Conservation Forum (in collaboration with City of Fredericksburg) in November 2014, Water Conservation Expo April 2015, and currently planning Conservation Expo April 2016 (scheduled)
  • Smart Water Solutions ad-hoc committee (with the participation of the City of Fredericksburg) launched
  • 2 Smart Water Solutions presentations (with city of Fredericksburg) made at Hill Country Home and Garden Show 2015
  • Local homeowners have adopted water-wise landscaping at their residences
  • Grant awarded by Hill Country Foundation of the Texas Hill Country for Water Conservation Education program with the City of Fredericksburg
  • Smart Water Solutions presentation (with city of Fredericksburg) made at Optimist Club in 2015

  Sustainability Consulting

  • Submitted customized plans to help local households and one local business maximize sustainability
  • At no charge fielded over 130 inquiries about rainwater collection, solar electricity, solar water heating, saving energy, recycling and reuse, and invitations to speak (as of 12/31/14)
  • Helped to train an Environmental studies international student from Uganda
  • Published major articles about energy saving in local newspaper and magazines

Zero Waste

  • Partnership with City in recommendation/writing of City Recycling Survey and Recycling for Special Events
  • Zero Waste for schools presentations made to entire faculty of FES, FPS, Stonewall Elementary and students/faculty at FHS and Providence Hall
  • Zero Waste presentation made to Morning Rotary Club
  • 50+ participants at Zero Waste Forum
  • Zero Waste pilot projects at FES and Providence Hall School
  • City of Fredericksburg incorporated our “A-Z local recycling list” into their web page on recycling and uploaded our source file document
  • Proposed a ban on plastic bags to our local City Council in 2015
  • Helped City of Fredericksburg staff prepare a report on Recycling to City Council in 2015
  • Recommended to our local City Council that they adopt curbside recycling, recycling of glass, plastics #3-7, and ban plastic bags in 2015
  • 2 Zero Waste presentations made at Hill Country Home and Garden Show 2015
  • Zero Waste committee at FES encouraged/enlisted third graders at FES in picking up recyclables at their school
  • Zero Waste committee at FES held an Earth Day bulletin board decorating contest for all grades
  • Crafted a curbside recycling proposal for the City of Fredericksburg and shown presentation to two City Councilman and to 2 City of Fredericksburg staff
  • Shown recycling proposal for Hill Country Memorial Hospital to two local doctors on hospital staff
  • Zero Waste presentation shown to Heritage Hills community
  • Expanded recycling program at Hill Country Memorial Hospital
